Controversy surrounding the Apostolic and Lay Schools, Mungret College and the separation of the two schools

A file relating to the controversy surrounding the Apostolic and Lay Schools, Mungret College and the separation of the two schools following intervention by the Bishop of Limerick and a Decree of Propaganda. Includes correspondence relating to the valuation of the property and the question of the ownership of the Mungret property. Includes a certificate of valuation (25 June 1921, 7pp) and various financial accounts. Includes a ground floor plan and front elevation of Mungret College. Finally, in 1928 a further session of the Sacred Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith decided the transference of the Lay School should not be insisted on but that the two schools should be administered separately (21 April 1928, 1p). Includes letters from Michael Curly, Archbishop of Baltimore offering his support to Mungret College. Refers also to the 'Mungret Case' (23 August 1928; 22 December 1928 - 4 February 1932, 5 items) and photographs of Cardinal's visit to Mungret, 1928 (2 items)

Crescent Past pupils' educational and career achievements and awards

Consists mainly of newspaper articles and photographs relating to past pupils' successes in academia and industry. Includes reports of qualifications and degrees, appointments, awards, prizes etc. Includes handwritten biographical details re. James Hassett, organist, and Maurice Hayes, radiologist. Also includes newspaper articles re. past pupils who became members of the British Army.

Crescent Past pupils involved in politics

Mainly consists of newspaper photographs and reports regarding past Cresentians in, or attempting to get into politics, both local and national. Subjects include Desmond O'Malley of Fianna Fail (later Progressive Democrats), Donogh O'Malley, Minister for Health, and
James O'Higgins, Fianna Fail Dail candidate.

Documents relating to the identification of boys and others in various photographs. Includes letters to Fr Stephen Bates SJ in this regard, and presumably in answer to his request for assistance in identifying people, as well as handwritten notes based on information gleaned from others. Also includes reference lists of boys identified in various photographs, dating from 1890-1907.

Ex-Crescent clergy: biographies and news re. appointments, jubilees, travels, achievements etc.

Contains biographical information on various ex-pupils of the Crescent, including two articles on Dr John Joseph Cantwell, Archbishop of Los Angeles, as well as correspondence involving Fr.Peter Halpin SJ, Fr Patrick O'Reilly SJ and Fr Robert Tyndall SJ, on the subject of Fr William Benn SJ, who was an ex-pupil of the Crescent. Also contains some documents relating to Canon John Hayes, founder of Muintir na Tire, as well as material on that organisation. Other material includes newspaper articles reporting on matters involving
ex-pupils of the Crescent, including lectures and television appearances by Fr Thomas Stack C.C., Glendalough, re-unions of old classmates in Limerick, and an article on the Second Vatican Council by Fr Dominic Johnson O.S.B. Also includes a document entitled 'Limerick Jesuits on the Hongkong-Singapore Mission', which contains a brief biography of some Jesuit missioners, some of whom attended the Crescent. In addition, there is a handwritten list of some past pupils from the Crescent who joined the priesthood. Also includes some material, including correspondence, in relation to the celebrations and presentation to mark the Golden Jubilee of Fr. Gerard Guinane SJ in 1967.

Fourth centenary of the death of St Ignatius Loyola

Documents relating to the events organised to mark the centenary, including the staging by the Old Crescent Players of the play 'The First Legion' in March and April 1956. Includes letters addressed to Fr Robert Tyndall SJ, Rector of the College, in reply to his invitation to attend the play. Also includes a souvenir programme, a poster, and photographs of the cast of the play, as well as newspaper announcements and reviews. A newspaper article from January of the same year reports on a sermon preached by Fr J. B. Stephenson SJ, Mungret College, on the important links between the Jesuits and Limerick.

The relevant year is identified for around half the total number of photographs. Includes a large badly damaged (torn or broken in half) mounted photograph of the Senior Cup winning team from 1908-09 at Cork Football Team with Fr Stanislaus MacLaughlin SJ, and a print and negative of the Junior team who played against Belvedere College on St. Patrick's Day, 1909. Many of the other images appeared in the SHC magazine for the relevant year. Includes photographs of Old Crescent rugby team.

Outdoor photographs of pupils at Crescent College, Limerick

Informal shots of groups of boys in outdoor settings. Some are possibly on school tours. Includes photographs of 'Crescent Volunteers' in 1915, 1917 and 1918. Some of these appear on both sides of a piece of card, on which is written the names of the subjects and the location of their camps (Tinerana and Terryglass). Another image shows a group of boys with Canon Hayes on Muintir na Tire outing to 'Hayes' at Murroe' (2 prints and a note identifying the subjects). Also includes a photo of Br Priest working in the garden.

Photograph albums of the Sacred Heart Church and Crescent College, Limerick

Two albums containing images of interior and exterior features of the Sacred Heart Church and College. One is dated 1929 and contains views of the facade of the church, residence and college buildings on the Crescent, the interior of the college, including the main staircase, landing, museum, science laboratory and study hall, as well as various interior features of the church. The other album contains similar images.

Includes a group of First Communicants (2 mounted prints and a negative); some class groups taken indoors, with a picture of the Colosseum as a backdrop; and some less formal outdoor groups. Many are reprinted by Fergus studios, Limerick [1951].
