Scope and content
From an unidentified Jesuit in Rome [from handwriting Mr John P. Barry SJ] to [Irish Fr Provincial]. Gives an account of the upheavals in Rome, and the effects on the Jesuit community there. Describes the movements of a mob and ‘a gross battalion of the Scum of the Roman plebaglia’, who posed a threat to the safety of the Jesuits, including Br. Keating and a group of scholastics, who were forced to quarter at the Irish College instead of the Roman College. The writer also describes his own experiences, including being ‘shut up’ in the Roman College for two days, and smuggling seven Italian Jesuits out of Rome to England. (Incomplete).
