◆ Francis Finegan SJ Biographical Dictionary 1598-1773
He was born at Foulkscourt, diocese of Ossory, November 25, 1640, and was son of John Butler and his wife Celia Dwyer.
He entered the Society at Tournai, March 1, 1622, and after his Noviceship was sent for his studies to the Champagne Province. He completed his Philosophy at Pont-à-Mousson, 1664-1666, and after three years of Theology at Rheims was transferred to Bordeaux because of his poor health. He was ordained priest 1670/1671, and shortly was, at his own request, dispensed from his first religious profession. he left the Society with the good-will of both the General and the Superior of the Mission.
Nothing further of his career can be traced until 1684 when, apparently, Father Butler asked to be received back into the Society. The General gave the Superior of the Mission leave to receive him back again in vero mortis periculo.
It is to be presumed therefore that Father Butler died in the Society but the date of his death is unknown.
