Church, House and School accounts for Sacred Heart Church, Limerick

Ledger-style record of incoming and outgoing moneys. Divided in three: church, house and school accounts, and divided into months within these sections. Outgoings include wages, candles, altar wine, coal, laundry, postage, electricity, medical fees, construction work etc. Income includes collections, retreats, special Masses, pensions, grants, rents etc.

expenditure associated with the Crescent Carnival held at Belfield Park from 13-29 May 1949. Accompanied by thank you cards addressed to those who had supported the carnival, and signed by Fr Timothy Mulcahy SJ.

File of letters addressed to Fr Thomas Wheeler SJ. Mainly relates to financial matters as Fr Wheeler was Province Procurator at the time. Includes letters from:

  • W.J. Gannon, Stillorgan, who wishes to become a lay brother with a congregation in Hatfield, England (1 December 1907);
  • Fr Timothy Kenny SJ, St Patrick’s, East Melbourne thanking Fr Wheeler for ‘getting the faculties to bless Beads’ (29 July 1908);
  • Fr. William Delany SJ, University College, St. Stephen’s Green requesting that a separate passbook and chequebooks be established solely for ‘the Kennedy account’, and that no money be drawn unless for the purposes expressed by Mr Kennedy. (8 September 1909);
  • Fr Richard O’ Reilly S.J. , St. Stanislaus College, Tullamore detailing the offer of Mr. Joe Corcoran of £500 for the 46 acres of land belonging to the Jesuits adjacent to Tullabeg (3 November 1910) and the legalities involved in the sale of land, trustees and the future of Tullabeg (13 November 1910)

Lists of benefactors to the Sacred Heart Church and Crescent College, Limerick

Each notebook is divided alphabetically, and entries are handwritten. They include the names and addresses of the various benefactors and the amount of money donated or frequency of subscription to Sacred Heart Church and Crescent College, Limerick. Further information is sometimes given, such as the specific intention of the patron when giving donations (eg., for the repair of a building, or the maintenance of a sanctuary lamp); change of address; the patrons' status or membership of sodality, choir etc. One of the notebooks' title is 'List of Benefactors of the House & College for invitations to Plays etc.', and includes the number of tickets given to certain benefactors. The notebooks include several insertions, some of which are letters from the benefactors themselves.

'School accounts; vol 4; From Sept. 1874 to' [1881] - handwritten account ledger with index. Includes record of the payment of school fees by the pupils' parents. Amounts entered as paid, in instalments. Includes accounts from a later period [1927-], which were later copied into another account book. Also includes a handwritten page stuck to the inside cover re. expenditure on construction/renovation, and an insertion re household expenditure.
