I therefore do earnestly hope you will not desert the university.' (14 November 1858, 2pp).

Discusses his tracts and remarks 'I...felt surprised to find persons influenced by them. I had intended them mainly as a protest. I have never courted or anticipated success - yet success came...' Remarks 'Permission was granted for the oratory to go to Oxford, but, by a secret instruction which was not to be shown to me, if I proposed to reside there, I was to be stopped.' Continues 'The version propaganda gives is that it fears my presence at Oxford will attract young Catholics there.' (24 April 1867, 4pp).

A file of letters from S. P. Redington, solicitors concerning the estate of Fr John Errington SJ. Refers to the will of George A. Nicolls (Fr Errington was named, amongst others, as one of the beneficiaries of this will and ultimately came to inherit the estates in Kildare and Westmeath. George A. Nicolls died without issue and his estate passed to his brother Archibald Dowdell Nicolls. The latter also died without issue and the estate was inherited by Fr John Errington SJ).

Letters from Rose (Gayner, nee Gwynn) (Fr Gwynn’s cousin) following the illness and death of Fr Gwynn’s sister, Sheila Moorehead, in December 1981. Includes references to a portrait of their ‘Aunt May’ and a family story about Walter Osborne (Fr Gwynn’s godfather): ‘He was apparently rather dominated by a powerful mother but there was an understanding that he would marry Aunt Lucy. However before the understanding could become an engagement he caught a bad cold, and died of pneumonia’ (8 February 1982, 4pp).

Includes a letter referring to Daniel O'Connell. Remarks 'In every way therefore it would give me high gratification to go up with the address to O'Connell. That he should think it worth his while to wish it is an additional motive.' (17 June 1844, 3pp). Includes a letter referring to recent proceedings. Remarks 'I think I see through your generalities that you are disheartened and - may I say - disgruntled?...So am I. Upon the education question - in the cause of mixed and free education I can stand no compromise or hesitation. It is the hope of our country - the only thing...to make us a country in place of a den of wild sects. Repeal is but a triviality compared to this...I pray God to see the time when she will be a nation...either with or without repeal. (31 May 1945, 4pp).
