• Includes a letter concerning the appointment of Fr Lavizzario as the agent of the Society in Rome (11 February 1818, 3pp).
• Includes a letter concerning an official letter received from the Bishop re-affirming that the Society of Jesus had not been restored. Remarks that their property in London is under threat '…Dr Poynter has employed a lawyer to claim our property in London. He has means of succeeding and his success will complete our ruin. We are in fact in a very dangerous crisis.' (23 July 1818, 2pp).
• Includes a letter concerning three scholastics from the English Province he proposes to send to Ireland for their studies. Describes the three (1 September 1818, 3pp).
• Includes a letter referring to a refusal to ordain students from Stonyhurst 'who do not renounce their religious state.' Continues 'very probably a requisition to us all to make such renunciation will soon arrive and this will bring the matter to an issue. Our refusal will be followed by censures, suspension…' ( 10 September 1818, 1p).
• Includes a letter remarking that the Society of Jesus in England has no way of obtaining Holy Orders except by going to Clongowes. Remarks 'The candidates must be adopted there as students of your college in order to be presented by you.' (29 September 1818, 2pp, incomplete).

Their letters and petitions for directions how to act show that they retain the full spirit of their vocation…on the other hand God sends comfort from Vienna, where the Austrian Emperor openly protects the Society and settles it in Gallicia and with generous allowances for subsistence and many privileges and exemptions.' Refers to Fr Kenney's return from America (23 September 1820, 2pp).

Remarks '…the Catholic Bill fills my head, heart and time…In this crisis we must have an agent here…there must be somebody to speak in our cause. Letter from Timothy Hurley (father of Joseph Hurley), Rusnacahara NS, Ahakista, Durrus, Bantry, County Cork to Irish Fr Provincial John Fahy SJ, St Francis Xavier's, Upper Gardiner Street, Dublin concerning his son's progress in Tullabeg. Refers to his contribution towards his son's upkeep.

Letter from Michael Browne, Bishop of Galway, Mount St Mary's, Galway to Irish Fr Provincial John R. MacMahon SJ asking him to allow Fr Edward J Coyne SJ devote as much time to the Vocation Organisation Committee over the coming months so that the report may be compiled; includes a copy reply from Fr MacMahon remarking that Fr. Coyne will '...devote to the preparation of the report of the Commission all the time and energy available.' (20 March 1942, 1p).

Letter from Joseph Quirke, Endwood Court, Handsworth Wood, Birmingham to Fr Gerald Corr SJ reminiscing positively on his days at Tullabeg and Clongowes. Fr Corr was a teacher and editor of 'The Clongownian' at this time. He is writing on the occasion of the 100 year anniversary of Clongowes.

Extract of a letter from Irish Fr Provincial to Fr John Neary SJ (Rector), St Mary's, Emo concerning a site for a cemetery in Emo. Remarks, 'I...have come to the conclusion that on the rare occasions of deaths in Emo, the interment should take place in Tullabeg.'

Letter from Irish Fr Provincial Timothy Kenny SJ, asking Fr Alfred Murphy SJ to make a request to Fr Nicholas Walshe SJ to let Fr Charles Lynch SJ have a room at Milltown, as he is unhappy at Tullabeg. Refers to the death of Fr McElroy. Reports the visit of Fr Carbery and Fr Gallwey. Describes the college as being immense, dark and ‘on the whole very fine’.

Letter from Fr William Byrne SJ to Fr Robert O'Dempsey SJ in relation to the Tontine buildings. Discusses the history of the Tontine buildings and the existence or otherwise of relevant deeds.

Letter from Fr Robert St Leger SJ, India to Fr John Curtis SJ, St Stanisalus College, Tullabeg, Tullamore, County Offaly containing extensive details of an incident concerning the college and church of Sivdahna. Explains fully the situation. Discusses and defends his position in the matter. Refers to three accusations levelled at him. Remarks that he wrote nine or ten times to the General 'I then got from him a letter full of accusations, of this I do not complain but I complain that all these accusations were considered just and I felt myself to have been condemned before my cause was examined.'

Letter from Fr Robert Haly SJ, Rector, Clongowes Wood College SJ to Irish Fr Vice-Provincial Patrick Bracken SJ at St Stanislaus College SJ, Tullabeg reporting on storm damage at Clongowes Wood College SJ. Mentions that Fr Charles Aylmer SJ dined with them the previous evening.

From Fr Peter Kenney SJ to Fr Patrick Bracken SJ. Announces that he will not be able to go to Tullabeg that year. Reports on the situation in Clongowes, and on the various Jesuits residents there. Reports also on the Jesuit mission in the Isle of Man, where Fr Aylmer stopped for a time to assess the situation. Refers to the debate on the question of whether the mission there should be retained by the Irish Jesuits, and also to the opening of a new chapel in Douglas.

Letter from Fr Patrick Meagher SJ, writing from Gardiner Street, Dublin, to Fr Patrick Bracken SJ, Vice Provincial, St Stanislaus College Tullabeg, King's County (County Offaly). Refers to the case of a young [novice] – ‘H.T.’, who is suffering from some sort of illness. Reports that he (Meagher) consulted a surgeon on the state of the man’s health. Reports that he received a letter that morning from Fr Bartholomew Esmonde SJ in Rome, who wrote about the church re-decoration in which he was involved, and also, more extensively, about a lecture given in Rome, which cast aspersions on the Catholic clergy of Ireland. Also refers to a letter he received from Fr Aylmer. Describes preparations for the ‘Festival’, including the recruiting of clergy to say Mass. Reports on the progress of building work also.

From Fr Patrick Bracken SJ, writing from Tullabeg, County Offaly to Fr Gahan in the Isle of Man. Reports on some members of the community in Tullabeg, including Fr Robert Haly and Fr Aylmer, and adds that Fr Esmonde is on his way to Rome. Refers to Fr Gahan’s problems in the Isle of Man in relation to the provision of Mass for Catholics in Douglas, and the question of whether the Bishop would permit this. Asks him to defer the sale of the chapel in Castletown until he (Fr. Bracken) receives a reply from the Fr. General.

Letter from Fr Patrick Bracken SJ to [ ]. Recommends various sources for J[ohn] O’Connell and other Catholic members of the House of Commons for their argument against the supremacy of the Crown. Suggests that they identify themselves, in this matter, ‘with all the Presbyterians of Ireland & Scotland as well as with the other Dissenters in denouncing & repudiating the Royal Supremacy’, and in doing so, gain support. Also refers to the Catholic episcopacy and the Reformation.

Letter from Fr Michael Browne SJ, [Fr Albert Power’s novice master], St Stanislaus College, Tullamore, County Offaly to Mr Cyril Power SJ concerning news from the college and wishing Mr Power well in his forthcoming examinations. Concludes ‘Pray for me you see I do not forget you or any of those I ever taught.’.

Letter from Fr McAlroy, Tullamore, County Offaly to Fr William Seaver SJ, St Stanislaus College, Tullabeg, County Offaly. Invites the latter and others to dine with him and the Archbishop on the following Thursday.

Letter from Fr Maurice Wolfe SJ, St Stanislaus College, Tullabeg, County Offaly to Lyons Fr Provincial Ambrose Monnot SJ. Asks the latter to write to the Irish Fr Provincial in relation to his (Fr Wolfe's) final vows. (In French).

From Fr Matthew Gahan SJ in the Isle of Man to Fr Patrick Bracken SJ in Tullabeg. Declares that he would not think he should cross the Channel (back to Ireland) in his current state of health, and furthermore that he would only leave if the person who was to supply for him had been there for a time. Refers to the debts owed by him to various people. States that he would rather ‘die in a ditch’ before yielding to ‘a Judas like trick on the part of Dr Briggs [Bishop of the Northern District]’.

Announces the names of those who have gone to Tronchiennes that year. Reports on his own activities and on Tullabeg. Also refers to the Repeal campaign. Doubts that the plans for a residence in Galway will come to fruition. Refers to the foundation of a College for Foreign Missions in Dublin, and announces the death of Fr Kearney. Asks if his correspondent might be disposed to go to Colombia to educate and carry out missionary work, as the population of Bogotà wish European Jesuits to do. Also refers to the political situation in Ireland.

Letter from Fr James Murphy SJ, writing from St Stanislaus College, Tullamore, County Offaly, to Irish Fr Provincial Patrick Keating SJ. Relates to a sequence of events involving Fr Murphy, Monsignor Gaffney, the Bishop of Meath (Dr. Thomas Nulty) and Fr Anderson. The Bishop tried to assert his right to examine Fr Anderson after the latter had been granted faculties by the Monsignor. The letter describes a conversation between Fr Murphy and the Monsignor on the subject, and Fr Murphy asks for the Provincial's approval to write to the Monsignor, confirming Fr Anderson's fitness in terms of theological knowledge.

Letter from Fr George Porter SJ, writing from Fiesole, to Irish Fr Provincial James Tuite SJ. Conveys Fr General’s opinion that is more important that Fr Finlay should be installed as a professor of philosophy in the Dublin College than be retained as Prefect of Studies in Tullabeg. Refers to Fr Browne who his going to his Tertianship, and informs Fr Tuite that Fr Keating has been allowed to go to Hadzor, Droitwich [for/after] his retreat. Suggests that Fr Browne be sent there too.

Letter from Fr Boursaud, Secretary to the Fr General, to Fr Tuite. Asks the latter to convey the sympathies of the Fr General to Fr Bannon in his illness. Also conveys permission to Fr Tuite to recall Fr Delany and to send him back to Tullabeg. Refers to the Archbishop of Sydney, and to New Zealand.

Diary includes entry dated 31 August 1909 which reads, ‘Since coming here to Mungret six years ago I’ve been struggling on much on the old lines ever seeking peace one way or another…It came upon me quite by surprise to be sent here from M(ill)town Park. I had been told I sh(oul)d be there 10 years (of course not for certain). Any way I made best of it. It was compensation to get away from relatives who had given me awful bother, poor creatures. I came here as Vice Rector & had lots of teaching. I had to study much & got on well enough. I expected to be appointed Rector, but after 2 years ceased to be Superior & felt it someways though I would have chosen it too.…In the matter of Latin it seems to me as if I had never known much about it before & still I am far from being a Latin scholar. This is absolutely true. Last year I had 2nd Arts Pass Greek & learnt a good deal about it too & glad of additional insight.…First year I had 1st Arts English Pass & Honors besides Pass [ ] of B.A. [And] 2nd Arts. Eyes got affected. Two months not allowed to read. Enjoyed the time. This year I had only Lat(in) B.A. & 2nd Arts & so like last year.…For all my reading, writing, thinking, results not much. I have not turned out at all what I expected. Much better so. I have given up thinking I ever shall.…I am now in my 63rd year, old enough to have sense. It is something to know that one has not much sense & never shall. Men are but children of larger growth.…one w(oul)d think I ought to have made more mark. Since I came here six years ago I have never been asked to preach anywhere, not even at the Crescent. I am glad now. I am determined for the future to be absolutely truthful with regard to mental state, & give up all sham.…I have a great deal of the buffoon in me. This vacation I was three weeks away at C.W.C.,…(Clongowes Wood College, Co. Kildare)…in Dublin & in [...]. All that time I was going about & meeting many. I joked & told stories & made people laugh &…in my own esteem shone & I am sure several thought I was always goodhumoured… the truth is very different.…As I have given up all desire of distinguishing myself, of attracting notice etc. I will try to make diary a companion.…The way to please God is to be as useful & helpful as one can. I must try. Reading & writing may be best for me.’

Diary is resumed after a three year break, on 1st October 1912, in an entry beginning ‘Tullabeg. here since Aug. 24th 1911.’
